Beginners

La Rosière makes learning to ski feel genuinely enjoyable. The beginner areas are easy to access from both resort centres, with free lifts like the Lutins magic carpet creating a calm and supportive environment for first turns. Everything is close by - ski school, rental and slopes - which makes a big difference when you or your children are just getting started. On a practical note, when you have little ones, there are also public toilets in the area near the Lutins magic carpet.

Progression feels natural here. Gentle greens, like the Dahu and Cabri slopes, lead easily onto cruisy blues, and the wide, uncrowded pistes mean there’s space to practise without pressure. Many clients mention how quickly confidence builds, helped by excellent ESF instructors and the relaxed pace of the resort.

Intermediates

For intermediates, La Rosière really comes into its own. Long blue runs and approachable reds spread across the mountain, with plenty of choice to suit how you’re feeling each day. The terrain from the main lift tops offers flexibility - you can keep things easy or step things up when ready. The blue runs from the top of the Fort chairlift seem to go on forever and are a favourite of our team.

It’s also a brilliant resort for mixed groups. Early intermediates can enjoy the French side at their own pace while stronger skiers explore further, including the Italian side. Skiing into Italy adds a real sense of adventure, even if you choose to stay closer to home when time is tight or ski school pickup is calling.

Advanced

Advanced skiers will enjoy the variety on offer, especially with the addition of the Mont Valaisan sector. Here, you’ll find the ski area’s highest peak at 2,800m, along with steeper reds and freeride opportunities which bring a more technical edge, while the Italian side offers longer descents and a change of pace. Etagne, a black run in the Mont Valaisan sector, as a wall with a 74% gradient!

There are 14 black runs to test yourself on, around 15% of the terrain is rated black, including the 3.6km long Franco Berthod piste. There are also off-piste routes between pistes and designated freeride areas. Confident skiers will appreciate the ability to cover ground quickly and explore both sides of the Espace San Bernardo.

For ski tourers, there are three secured trails offering between 480m and 750m of vertical ascent.

Mountain fun zones

The Petit Saint-Bernard funcross is a standout, especially for families. It’s a fun, flowing piste where everyone can ski together and enjoy the experience. When we were there with our families, this was the run that we’d be asked to do again and again!

The Poletta snowpark also adds variety for those looking to try something new. It has three routes (green, blue and red) so everyone can give it a go. If you have a young freestyler in your clan, take them to the mini-snowpark which is specially designed for kids. Here, they can hone their tricks in safety on age-appropriate features. The ski area also has a boardercross in an area of red runs below the Fort chairlift.

Nordic skiing

For a slower pace, there are around 6km of free cross-country trails. These offer a peaceful way to enjoy the scenery and take in the quieter side of the mountains.

Snow experiences

There’s much more to La Rosière than skiing. Snowshoeing is especially popular, with guided routes that take you through peaceful forest landscapes. For something different, the snowshoeing biathlon is a great option - combining a scenic walk with fun, team-based challenges including laser shooting and races. It’s ideal if you’re travelling with friends or a mixed group.

After the slopes close, you can try Snake Gliss, where you are taken on an exhilarating ride down the mountain on a train of sledges driven by an instructor.

Other highlights include ski touring and first tracks sessions, where you can enjoy freshly groomed slopes before the lifts open.

Family fun

Children are particularly well catered for. From sledging areas and the mountain coaster to fun pistes and outdoor play zones, there’s always something to keep them entertained.

Events like torchlit descents add an extra sense of excitement and create those memorable holiday moments families love.

Don’t miss La Rosière’s Mountain Coaster. You’ll embark on a 700m downhill ride on a sledge on rails, you’re in charge of the brakes so you can choose to use them (or not!). You can reach speeds of up to 45km/hour. At the end of the ride, you’ll be able to see what your average speed was.

The tourist office organises a weekly programme of activities and there is always plenty for families to enjoy. On our own family trips there, we’ve visited the snow groomer garage to learn more about these amazing machines, enjoyed cheering on the ice hockey team and took part in an ESF ‘party’ on the slopes with fun games. Off-snow

Off the slopes, you’ll find ice skating, bowling and walking trails, along with a weekly market and plenty of places to relax. Our favourite activity? We love cheering on the local team, Les Tigres Blancs in their weekly ice hockey match. There’s a great atmosphere and you can grab a snack and a drink and maybe even a selfie with one of the players. As they are all locals, there’s a chance you might also see them out and about in the resort in the week.

La Rosière offers real variety without the resort ever feeling busy or overwhelming.

Restaurants

There’s a decent dining scene for a resort of this size, with around 30 restaurants to choose from. You’ll find everything from traditional Savoyard favourites to easy, family-friendly options.

On the slope options are good with Le Paradis, which describes itself as a mountain bistro, being accessible on skis and from the resort on foot, making it a good lunch spot to meet non-skiers (who don’t mind an energetic uphill walk). We loved the refined take on local favourites, particularly the Pela, a take on the popular tartiflette. Plus, (from a purely practical perspective) the loos are on the same level as the restaurant, so no tricky stairs to negotiate!

If you are skiing back to resort to eat, then the restaurant Le Solario at the Alparena Hotel is a great option. It has a beautiful terrace overlooking the resort and the surrounding mountains.

Pizza spots are particularly popular, and restaurants like Le Flocon are known for great food and a welcoming atmosphere – and its views over the ice rink below. Dining here feels relaxed and easy, which works well after a day on the slopes.

Bars and après-ski

Après-ski in La Rosière is low-key and sociable. Think drinks on sunny terraces or cosy evenings with friends rather than late-night parties. It’s ideal if you prefer a more laid-back end to the ski day. The bar at the hotel I.L.Y has a well-stocked bar with knowledgeable bartenders, mid-century modern style and a terrace with amazing views done the valley. It's a great spot to see the sunset. The Via Ferrata in Les Eucherts is the place to go for a later evening out.

Shops and amenities

Both resort centres have everything you need, including mini markets, bakeries, ski hire shops and essential services. The layout means you’re never far from what you need, keeping everything simple and stress-free.
