Beginners

Plagne Montalbert is very well suited to beginners. A small local beginner area sits at the base of the slopes, with a green run served by a free drag lift and gentle terrain ideal for first turns.

There are also additional beginner zones higher up, including at the top of the gondola where you’ll find another green run, allowing progression as confidence builds.

The beginner zone in nearby Plagne Centre is hard to beat and offers even more extensive facilities when ready to progress further.

Once you have mastered first turns, there are lots of gentle blue runs in the immediate area that give you opportunities to practise.

Intermediates

Intermediate skiers will find excellent variety. With around 80% of La Plagne’s slopes rated blue or red, the area is perfect for cruising.

In the immediate vicinity of Plagne Montalbert, there is a choice of blues and reds from the top of the Montalbert gondola or the Grangettes lift, both of which leave from the village. For a long scenic blue with a good altitude difference, you can take the gondola to 1970m then the Adrets, Edmond Blanchoz and Pravendue blues right the way back to the village at 1350m.

From Plagne Montalbert, you can access wide open pistes in the main ski area via Plagne Centre. Once in the main area, you can head over to the far side of the ski area and enjoy scenic forest runs down towards Montchavin-Les Coches. These tree-lined descents are particularly enjoyable and provide a different feel to the high-altitude terrain.

The lift connections make it easy to explore the wider Paradiski area (the Vanoise Express goes from Montchavin-Les Coches to Peisey-Vallandry on the Les Arcs side) over the course of a week.

Advanced

Advanced skiers will enjoy the challenging terrain just above Plagne Centre and Aime 2000, which is easily accessible from Plagne Montalbert. The runs from the top of the Becoin lift offer faster and more technical descents.

In the wider La Plagne area, the Bellecôte Glacier offers steep black runs, moguls and extensive off-piste opportunities.

There is also a ski touring route starting from Plagne Montalbert, that takes you through the forest up to Le Fornelet at 1970m. This offer an alternative, more adventurous experience in the mountains for those with the appropriate level.

Mountain Fun Zones

Across La Plagne and Paradiski, there are multiple snowparks, boardercross areas and freestyle zones, including the RidersNation snowpark between Belle Plagne and Montchavin and the Buffalo Park fun slope above Plagne Centre.

Plagne Montalbert itself also has beginner-friendly fun and freestyle areas for trying new skills in a relaxed setting. The fun Lutins slope, accessible from the top of the Montalbert gondola, is in the heart of a forest of larch trees. Children will love following the trail in search of trolls, elves and fairies.

Nordic Skiing

Montalbert offers good cross-country skiing opportunities, with 15km of local trails. There are trails across the wider La Plagne area too, with some of the most scenic loops just above Champagny-en-Vanoise, in Champagny-le-Haut, the gateway to the Vanoise National Park.

Family-friendly activities

Plagne Montalbert is has lots of activities designed for families. Secure sledging areas in the village centre and at the top of the gondola allow children to play safely, while weekly programmes from the tourist office include games, events and entertainment.

You can also try alternative ways of sliding down the slopes with SnakeGliss (a train of connected sledges driven by an instructor), Airboarding (inflatable sledges) and Yooner (a hybrid sled/ski) all on offer.

Outdoor and scenic experiences

Snowshoeing is a highlight here, with guided walks, through providers such as the ESF, exploring quiet forest trails and surrounding landscapes in the daytime and after the pistes close. These routes offer a chance to experience the mountains at a slower, more relaxed pace.

There are also marked walking routes, making it easy to explore independently or with a guide.

Unique and memorable experiences

Just below Plagne 1800, and well worth a visit if you have a car (it’s just a 20 minute drive), the Olympic bobsleigh track provides a unique adrenaline-filled experience reaching speeds of up to 100km/h. You can choose to have a solo experience, or to be a passenger with two others and a driver or take a driverless four-person bob.

Also unique to La Plagne is the Aerolive experience, an open-sided gondola where you are attached by a harness and can lean out and experience the thrill of gliding over the mountainside up to the highest point in the ski area, Live 3000. Some of our team have tested this and it’s incredible.

Local dining scene

Plagne Montalbert offers a small selection of restaurants and a couple of bars. Traditional Savoyard dishes are widely available, alongside more modern options and a pizzeria.

Relaxed après-ski and evenings

Après-ski here is low-key, with a focus on relaxed drinks and socialising rather than late-night nightlife.

This suits families and those looking for a quieter stay, with a welcoming atmosphere in local bars and restaurants.

Shops and amenities

Most shops and services are located in the central pedestrian area at the foot of the slopes. This includes a mini-market and a deli, ski hire shops and essential services.
