Pralognan‑la‑Vanoise stands out for its authenticity. This is a real mountain village, not a purpose-built resort, with a long history dating back over 150 years. Timber and stone chalets line narrow streets, often left snow-covered to preserve the natural environment and traditional feel.
Agriculture is a key activity in the area with specialist cheese production of the Beaufort Chalet d’Alpage, with is AOP certified and has a reputation as one of the tastiest cheeses in the Alps. The village also has a genépi distillery which produces this traditional liqueur using artisan methods.
Set beneath glaciers and within the Vanoise National Park, the setting feels wild and remote in the best way. You’ll find a strong connection to mountain life here, from farming traditions to local produce.
The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with a strong sense of community. It’s a place where everything moves at a slower pace, making it ideal if you’re looking to switch off and enjoy the mountains without the intensity of larger resorts.
The village is compact enough to navigate on foot, with lifts, shops and restaurants all within easy reach.
The resort was the venue of the curling events at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville and its legacy was the Le Cristal sports centre, which means the resort punches above its weight in terms of amenities. The centre has an Olympic size ice rink, swimming pool, bowling alley and climbing wall. add variety beyond skiing, giving the resort a well-rounded feel without losing its charm.

Pralognan‑la‑Vanoise is a special place to experience skiing for the first time. There’s a dedicated beginner area right in the village centre, making those first days simple and accessible.
It's a small ski area so you may find yourself repeating runs, which may suit complete beginners. There are around nine green runs (that vary in length) and some gentle blues, there’s enough variety to build confidence at your own pace over a week. The layout allows beginners to progress gradually, with options both at the base and higher up the mountain.
Intermediates will find a good balance for a smaller area, with eight red runs and a few blues to explore.
While the overall ski area is limited compared to larger resorts, the uncrowded slopes and scenic surroundings make skiing feel relaxed and enjoyable. It’s less about ticking off kilometres and more about enjoying the experience.
Advanced downhill skiing is more limited, with just one main black run, but this is where Pralognan‑la‑Vanoise offers something different.
The resort is best known for ski touring, with access to incredible high alpine terrain around the Grande Casse. The area is recognised on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage Sites for its mountaineering and holds the Terre d’Alpinisme designation.
As well as guided treks, there are two marked trails near the slopes which allow for safe ski touring. Le Rosset is an introductory trail with lots of routes back to the ski area. Moriond has an elevation gain of between 300m and 600m and once you start there is no return until you reach the summit.
Pralognan-la-Vanoise is a standout destinations in France for this type of skiing.
There are natural fun zones created by two ungroomed freeride trails through the forest, which are marked and secure, one red and one blue. You’ll zigzag between the fir trees, link banked turns and jump from one bump to another. These are routes designed for playful, off-piste style skiing in a controlled environment.
A boardercross with natural obstacles and banked turns adds variety for those wanting something different.
Pralognan‑la‑Vanoise’s Nordic area is located at the gateway to the Vanoise National Park and is one of the largest in Savoie. With over 27km of trails set in peaceful forests and vast plateaux, it’s ideal for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
The location at the gateway to the national park makes this a real highlight, especially if you enjoy quieter mountain experiences.

Families are well catered for, with sledging areas, pony sled rides and even igloo-building experiences. These activities make it easy to fill days both on and off the slopes.
The Le Cristal complex provides a great indoor alternative, with swimming pools, an Olympic ice rink, bowling and a wellness area.
There are also more relaxed options like farm visits, village markets and cultural activities such as heritage tours and tours showcasing the gastronomy of the resort, giving you a broader mountain experience beyond skiing.

Après-ski is calm and low-key. Evenings are more about a relaxed meal or a quiet drink than lively bars or clubs.
This suits the overall feel of the resort, where the focus is on unwinding rather than partying.
The village has all the essentials, including bakeries, butchers and small supermarkets, along with speciality shops selling local products.
Markets and farm shops add to the experience, making it easy to enjoy the region’s food culture during your stay.

This was my first time skiing in Pralognan-la-Vanoise but my second time visiting. As someone who lives in the Alps, I'm very much drawn to the village's unbeatable and authentically French atmosphere. I can confidently say Pralognan is a charming and one-of-a-kind hidden gem nestled amongst the mountains. If you're looking for a true French experience or searching for your next family holiday, I'd definitely recommend it.
