Orelle is a collection of small hamlets rather than a typical ski resort. It retains a strong sense of local life, with traditional stone houses and a peaceful setting in the Maurienne Valley.
It’s the kind of place you choose for simplicity and value rather than buzz. The atmosphere is calm and understated, with very little in the way of nightlife or resort entertainment. If you’re happy with a quieter base after a full day on the slopes, it works well.
What Orelle lacks in size, it makes up for in access. A high-speed gondola connects the village to Val Thorens in around 20 minutes, opening up the full 3 Vallées.
The village is also easy to reach, with motorway access nearby and a train station just a short distance away. This makes it a convenient entry point into a major ski area, particularly for those travelling by train.
Facilities in Orelle are limited. There’s a small selection of essentials near the gondola base, including a bar, restaurant and mini-market.
For more variety, you’ll need to head to nearby towns like St Michel de Maurienne or Modane, which are both a drive away. This is worth keeping in mind if you enjoy eating out or want a livelier après-ski scene.

Orelle is not the easiest place for complete beginners. There is a small nursery area at the top of the gondola, but the main access routes into the wider ski area can feel more challenging.
Beginners who progress quickly will find options, especially higher up, but absolute beginners may find other resorts more convenient for learning.
For intermediates, Orelle is a strong choice. Once up on the mountain, you have access to long blue and red runs across Val Thorens and beyond.
Wide, open pistes and high-altitude cruising make it easy to build confidence and enjoy full days on the slopes. It’s also a great base for exploring further across the 3 Vallées if you’re comfortable covering distance. A first tracks experience from Orelle (accessible to those happy on blue pistes) gives the opportunity to enjoy freshly groomed slopes before everyone else.
Advanced skiers will find plenty to enjoy, with access to challenging runs, steep descents and extensive off-piste terrain.
High-altitude areas like Cime Caron offer more demanding routes, while the full 3 Vallées opens up huge scope for exploration. It’s a particularly appealing option if you want serious skiing without paying premium resort prices.
For ski tourers there is a dedicated marked route that leaves from Plan Bouchet, the area at the top of the gondola from Orelle. Its high altitude, at 2,300m, and 387m of altitude gain, offers a different challenge and incredible views.
Freestyle options are available in nearby Val Thorens, including a well-known snowpark with areas for different levels.
Val Thorens also has a family-friendly park and fun slopes, giving a mix of playful terrain alongside the more traditional pistes. On the Orelle side, there is a boardercross.
Nordic skiing options are limited locally, but available within the wider 3 Vallées area.
High-altitude routes provide a different way to explore the mountains, with scenic views and quieter surroundings compared to the main ski runs.

Most activities are centred around the slopes and accessed via Val Thorens. These include experiences such as snowparks, scenic viewpoints and high-altitude attractions. From Orelle you can try Snake Gliss, whizz down the slopes on a train of sledges driven by an instructor. There are also snowshoe itineraries from the top of the gondola and through the hamlets that make up Orelle.
There’s also the option to access some of the highest viewpoints in the Alps, including panoramic spots at over 3,000m.
The area is home to a number of standout experiences, including one of the highest zip wires in the world.
From Orelle, you can take an exclusive gondola ride to the Cime Caron summit after the lifts have closed to enjoy an aperitif with traditional Savoyard delicacies with incredible views of the sun setting. For a bit of quirky culture, Orelle is also home to the Espace Alu, a museum dedicated to showcasing the history of aluminium production in the Maurienne valley.
These activities add an extra layer to your trip, particularly if you’re looking to try something beyond traditional skiing during your stay.
Back in Orelle itself, the pace is slower. Evenings are generally relaxed, with limited organised activities.
