Bourg St Maurice

Bourg Saint Maurice is one of the easiest ski destinations to reach, with direct train links from London and the option of taking the Eurostar to Paris then a fast TGV train.

The funicular railway is powered by electricity and connects the town directly to Arc 1600 in just seven minutes, making slope access quick and simple. It also makes this one of the greenest destinations to get to.

There is no skiing directly in Bourg Saint Maurice itself. Instead, you take the fast and regular funicular up to Arc 1600.

From there, the entire Les Arcs ski area opens up, with connections across to the La Plagne side of the Paradiski area too.

The ski area

Les Arcs forms part of Paradiski, the second biggest lift-linked ski area in the world with around 425km of pistes.

The area stretches from forested lower slopes to high-altitude terrain, offering huge variety for all levels.

Beginners

Beginners benefit from gentle tree-lined slopes around Arc 1600 and dedicated learning areas across the resort.

Intermediates

Intermediates will find endless cruising terrain, particularly around Arc 1800 and higher up towards the Grand Col.

Advanced

Advanced skiers can tackle long black runs like the Aiguille Rouge, with serious vertical and challenging terrain.

Off-piste opportunities are extensive, particular on north-facing slopes.

Skiing variety

One of Bourg Saint Maurice’s biggest strengths is its location. As well as exploring the Les Arcs and La Plagne ski areas that make up Paradiski, with a car, or by public transport, you can easily access La Rosière, Sainte Foy, Tignes and Val d’Isère and ski a day or two in different destinations.

Snow activities

A wide variety of activities are available in Les Arcs and the resorts surrounding Bourg Saint Maurice, including snowshoeing, paragliding, snowmobiling and ice climbing. Les Arcs has an incredible zip wire where you fly down from the top of Le Varet cable car to Arc 2000 at speeds of up to 130km/hour.

Exploring the Tarentaise

Bourg Saint Maurice is perfectly positioned to explore other top resorts, with many within a short drive or just a bus ride away (if you arrived by train and don’t have a car).

If you want variety, you can ski a different area almost every day. Explore La Rosière and ski into Italy for a day, take advantage of the superb off piste skiing and cosy resort feel in Sainte Foy, or enjoy the world-renowned slopes and après in Val d’Isère and the extensive slopes of its neighbour, Tignes.

As a proper town, Bourg offers more non-ski options than most resorts, including shopping, cinema, a sports centre and cultural visits organised by the tourist office.

Restaurants and dining

Bourg Saint Maurice has a wide selection of restaurants, from casual cafés to more traditional dining.

Local bakeries and food shops add to its authentic feel and everyday convenience. There are two organic supermarkets with superb deli counters (one opposite the station for those picking up a picnic for the train).

Bars and nightlife

The town has a lively après-ski and nightlife scene, with bars and clubs both in Bourg and up in Les Arcs.

It’s a great choice if you want more life than a typical resort village.
