Tarentaise - La Rosiere

The resort

La Rosiere is located in the heart of the Haute Tarentaise and set in a forest on the Italian border. It is a friendly south-facing resort built in an attractive chalet style in keeping with local architecture. Linked with La Thuile in Italy, it is the only Savoyard resort to offer an international ski area of 150km of marked pisted runs (Espace San Bernardo).
More

La Rosiere sits high on the sunny slopes above Bourg St Maurice, facing Les Arcs across the Tarentaise Valley.

La Rosiere is a very family-oriented purpose-designed resort, it is almost unique in French skiing in its cross-border ski link to La Thuile in Italy.

Today the resort revolves around two autonomous hubs: the centre of the resort and Les Eucherts village, each with its own shops, high-speed chairlift and ski lesson meeting points, which are linked via a pathway through the forest.

The original village of La Rosiere turned 50 in 2011 but the most recent development has been in Les Eucherts, complete with high-calibre slope side accommodation.

The development of Les Eucherts incorporates some excellent shops and restaurants, the tourist office, an ice rink and bowling complex and a state-of-the-art nursery as well as ski school facilities, all a few metres apart.  It is all extremely family friendly so it’s no surprise that the village has the highest official ‘Famille Plus Montagne’ award.

History

An important transalpine route linking Savoie to the Aosta Valley, the Roman road through the Petit Saint Bernard Pass was built in the late 1800’s. Because of its strategic cross-border position, the Petit Saint Bernard Pass & the mountains surrounding it have been the setting for lots of events and battles, including the annexation of Savoy by France in 1860, and the attacks by the Italian army in 1940. The Espace San Bernardo still shows the scars of its past battles today, and links France, Italy and Europe via its slopes.

After an unforgettable flight from the Petit-St-Bernard pass, fabulous off-piste itineraries await both skiers and snowboarders such as The Ruitor: at an altitude of 3300 metres - with a 2100 metre vertical drop!

The outings are supervised by high mountain guides and are made up of single or multiple drops. They are aimed at lovers of powder snow and wide open expanses.

Participants should be of a good level of fitness, with a certain amount of technical skills.

Speedriding

Combine the sensations of skiing with those of paragliding. Often considered to be an extreme sport, speed riding in La Rosière is an activity accessible to all.

Snowkiting

Skiers and snowboarders evolve in relatively flat landscapes. The snow kite is to skiing what kite surf is to the ocean.

At the windy junction between France and Italy, the Petit Saint Bernard mountain pass is recommended by snow kite fanatics.

Come and learn on a beautiful spot facing Mt Blanc where snow is guaranteed. While Snowkiting, you are not flying, but simply sliding on your skis or snowboard, pulled by a powerkite. All instructors are specifically trained by the French Federation (FFVL).

Helicopter rides

Offer yourself the flight of a lifetime with rides around the Tarentaise valley or towards the Mont Blanc. Exhilarating and some fabulous views.

Paraglading

Calm and gentle flights, accompanied with a fully qualified instructor. Also available: pilot courses

Take the short-cut through the forest: No need to take the car if you want to get from the centre of La Rosière to Les Eucherts: a short walk through the forest will get you there in a trice! This pedestrian path, about a kilometre in length, is easy going for everyone and a special plus is that it is well-lit at night too. Just right for that post-prandial stroll!

A trail for little hunters: Put on your snowshoes and follow this special themed trail, where the whole family can learn all about animal tracks.

Chairlifts for pedestrians: Three chairlifts are available to walkers (Ecudets, Roches Noires Express and Eucherts Express), so that everyone can reach the highest mountain-tops and admire the spectacular views of the Haute-Tarentaise and Mont-Blanc.

Skiing

Linked with La Thuile in Italy, La Rosiere is the only Savoyard resort to offer an international ski area of 150 km pisted runs. The ski area is known as Espace San Bernardo. More

SKI AREA

With a high sunshine record (thanks to the south facing aspect of La Rosière) and an excellent snow record (with north facing slopes in Italy), l’Espace San Bernardo offers something for every type of skier.

If you have your own transport don’t forget that it’s not just the skiing of Les Arcs across the valley that’s accessible to you, but also that of its linked neighbour La Plagne, or going up the valley, the secret powder stash that is Ste Foy.  A little further still lie Tignes and Val d’Isere, or you could forget your car and ski over the border in to Italy to access some of the most exciting and affordable heli-skiing in the Alps with vertical descents of up to 2,100m possible.

BEGINNERS

La Rosiere is a good choice for beginners, thanks to its well suited terrain and well designed village base which means that your equipment rentals, the ski school and the nursery slopes are just a few steps from your apartment. Great if you have children. There are 3 free lifts near the main village.

INTERMEDIATES

Intermediates will enjoy the terrain the most with a huge choice of blue and red pistes on both sides of the border that radiate out to the peaks of Le Belvedere and Chaz Dura. You get a real sense of travel as you enter Italy and the Nuova and San Bernardo runs combined give a wonderful 11km run down to La Thuile (Italy) for a lunchtime pizza.

EXPERTS

Despite being primarily a family ski destination, advanced skiers can still find plenty to entertain them here if they use a little creative thinking.   15% of the terrain is rated black with 16 runs of choose from in the Espace San Bernardo, the most challenging arguably the 3.6km long Franco Berthod piste.

OFF-PISTE

Off-piste areas can be found between the pistes and in the designated freeride area around the top of the Educets chairlift. More serious off pisting can be accessed just outside the lift network.

SNOWBOARDERS

For snowboarders, most of the lifts are chairs so for those beginners amongst you this is a good resort for you. Sunny slopes make the snow a little softer ideal for gentle freeriding.
