Chatel

Situated at the end of the picturesque and rural Abondance valley and set between Lake Geneva and the Mont-Blanc, Chatel is just a stone's throw from the Swiss border.

It is the most Swiss-like of all the French resorts and is an authentic mountain village, whose combination of tradition and modernism welcomes you in an exceptional setting.

There are 38 working farms which contribute to the village’s economic development and make Châtel an authentic mountain village, which has gradually expanded while still respecting the environment. Here are some ideas of activities, however there is plenty more on offer!

Portes du Soleil Multipass
Thanks to the Portes du Soleil Multi Pass enjoy unlimited activities for everyone in the Portes du Soleil area. For all the holidaymakers staying at a participating accommodation provider, the Multi-Pass gives you access to more than 70 activities in the 12 village resorts of the Portes du Soleil. Enjoy them on your own, as a couple, with your family or in a group… for only €3* per day of stay. Children under 5 are free.

Mountain biking
The Châtel Mountain Bike Park is located at Pré-la-Joux/ Plaine Dranse. Reached via Pierre-Longue and/or Rochassons chairlifts, it offers around 20 downhill routes of all levels of difficulty, maintained and secured by a team of bike patrol. There are two slopestyles (one of them pro).

Châtel Mountain bike park
A special area dedicated to mountain biking fanatics is reached via the Pierre Longue and/or Rochassons chairlifts. Offering 20 downhill mountain biking trails for every level and several fun areas for new school riding disciplines. You’ll find North-Shores-style zones, a kid’s shore, slopestyle and a pump track. 

Hiking
With this trail, you'll discover the mountain birds and particularly those you can see in Châtel, which means about 20 different sorts. From the Col, de Bassachaux takes the wide road (GR5), along the route that continues to the summit of Les Rochassons. The return journey is the same way.

Rock climbing
Châtel village has two different climbing sites offering a full range of activities.

Summer sledge
Situated at Pré-la-Joux, this 650m downhill run guarantees thrills and laughter for all the family! Children under 1.25m must be accompanied in the bobsled by an adult.

Fantasticable
The only ride of its kind in the Alps! Comfortably positioned in a harness, you fly along at almost 100 km/h (60 mph) at up to 240m above the hamlet of Plaine Dranse. Accessed from Pré-la-Joux via the Pierre Longue and Les Rochassons chair lifts. Activity open to people weighing between 35 and 120 kg. Together it is better, try the Fantasticable ride in DUO!

Chatel Aventures - Treetop
7 all-natural treetop adventure circuits situated at the arrival of the Super Châtel gondolas, near the ski lift Poussinet. From budding adventurers (the activity is available to children from 2 years) to experienced climbers greedy for sensations, everyone can find a suitable adventure!

1 P’tit Kid circuit, accessible to children from 2 years and up to 1.05m, accompanied by an adult.

2 Kid circuits reserved for children between 1.05m and 1.35m tall, completing the course on their own.

4 trails for minimum height 1.35m and up to 1.50m (accompanied by an adult), or for unaccompanied children of height 1.50m or more.

Electric mountain bike
The bikes are easy to handle and the tracks are wide and safe. This activity is suitable from 14 years old and 1 metre 50 tall. The electric MTB has 26-inch wheels (adult wheels). A choice of marked trails are available throughout the area including 3 routes near Chatel:

  • Pré la Joux circuit
  • Super Châtel to Morgins
  • Super Châtel to Col du Saix 

Battery recharging stations are installed throughout the area to ensure you can make the most of the huge amount of biking on offer. In Châtel the shops Mésière Sport, Mountain Ride and Ski Set - Charles sports are renting electric MTB.

Chatel fun bike
An activity combining a BMX designed for mountain trails and laser shooting. Green and blue circuits. You can just do the BMX only if you wish. Open to those above 4ft 7.

Waterpark Forme d’O
The sports pool of 25m long
The leisure pool: reserved for recreational activities and children, this gently sloping pool from 0cm to 1.5m. It offers an aqua-ludic course with swimming against the current and two water mushrooms.
The outdoor pool: 200m2 and 1.25m deep, completes the part of the centre reserved for water leisure activities, with an unobstructed view over the valley. Heated to 32° in winter, it offers the possibility to swim in the open air. In summer there is a terrace with sunbathing, an aquasplash for children and a green area where activities (badminton, volleyball...) are held.

In the wellness area there is:
An indoor heated pool with bubble benches and waterfalls,
4 saunas (including 1 outdoor),
2 hammams,
1 rest room
A fitness area: cardio training room with treadmills, elliptical trainers, rowing machines...

The Oceane Spa offers a full range of massages as well as face and body treatments.

Lake Vonnes
1km from the village centre, the trail around the lake is equipped for walking, cycling and pushchairs, etc. Like a giant fountain, the water jet in the middle of the Lac de Vonnes reaches a height of 40m. And at an altitude of 1,300m, it is the highest fountain in France! You can rent paddle boards.

White water activities
Canyoning, hydrospeed, rafting, kayaking.

Tennis
Châtel's tennis facilities consist of 5 recently renovated tennis courts and a volleyball court, all situated in a beautiful setting. Loan of tennis rackets and balls from Châtel Tourisme.

Mini-golf
Loy leisure centre - 18-hole golf course. Open daily.

Paragliding
Open to all for young and old. No physical condition or experience is required. Discover with qualified instructors. Various flight times available.

Indoor playground
Next to the Forme d'O. C L'Aventure Châtel is an indoor playground for children from 2 to 12 years old specially designed for them! 400m² covered, heated, completely safe space. Children will have a great time in the plastic ball pools, slides, a small toboggan run, trampolines, climbing nets etc...

Outdoor playground
Play facilities at the Lac de Vonnes. You'll find a zip line, slides, spring games and a balance course...

Bungee trampolines
Trampolines are located on the esplanade between Forme d'O and C L'aventure. Suitable for people weighing between 20 and 70kg. 15 min sessions.

Chatel restaurants and bars

Chatel is blessed to have many excellent restaurants and bars in the village. You will be spoilt for choice!

Butchers, bakers, regional produce, takeaway food, Sherpa or Petit Casino supermarket, hairdressers, tabac, pharmacy, bank, gift shops, sport shops, sweet shop...so much choice!

Getting to Chatel, France

By road
Driving distance from Calais to Les Gets approx. 820km (538 miles) (approx. 8hrs). A6 motorway via Macon followed by the A40 motorway towards Geneva. Exit at Annemasse, continue to Thonon then follow signs for Vallée d’Abondance/Châtel.

From Northern Europe, access via the Swiss motorway towards Martigny. Follow signs for Monthey - Grand Saint Bernard, exit the autoroute at Monthey (Portes du Soleil exit) then follow signs for Morgins.

By rail & air
The nearest train station for Chatel is Thonon-les-Bains, 40km away.

  • Pass Portes du Soleil MTB: 28th June-30th June 2024 - the Pass’Portes du Soleil MTB is an 80km mountain bike ride between 1000 and 2450m of altitude, in France and Switzerland, to discover the fabulous Moutain Bike domain of the Portes du Soleil and its grandiose landscapes,
  • Savoie Cheese Festival: 6th July-7th July 2024 - the 19th Fête des Fromages de Savoie, held in Châtel, in the Abondance A.O.P. region, is a weekend-long celebration of the delights of cheesemaking. A not-to-be-missed annual event, this travelling celebration gives local residents and visitors alike the opportunity to go behind the scenes of cheese-making and discover the values that go with it,
  • Bastille Day Celebrations: 14th July 2024 - music, fireworks, dancing,
  • Childrens festival: 28th July-31st July 2024 - Châtel is offering 4 days of entertainment for children, with a show every evening!
  • The St Laurent village festival: 4th August 2024 - there is one day in the summer when the whole village and its guests come together to celebrate the village festival, "La Saint Laurent", named after the patron saint of the parish,
  • La Belle Dimanche: the mountain pastures festival (46th edition): 18th August 2024 - The Belle Dimanche is one of the oldest traditionnal Savoyard festival. It honours the shepherds and their animals, but also traditional craftsmanship, to the delight of all.
