resort info

Set amid forest and nestling at the foot of the imposing Criou mountain, Samoëns has remained unspoilt by tourist developments. Despite recent growth on the outskirts, the many traditional-style bars and restaurants at Samoens ski resort still give a feel for the 'real' rural France. Samoens has a small and traffic free centre with narrow streets, stone fountain, a church, an ancient linden tree and other traditional buildings. Each Wednesday there is a market in the square.

Non-ski activities in Samoens village include dog-sledding, indoor climbing and skating but also some more unusual activities such as archery in the forest, caving, ice climbing or diving under ice!

Being at the heart of the Giffre Valley, the very pretty village of Samoens Grand Massif is only a 20 minute drive from the motorway exit near the TGV train station of Cluses and only 55km from Geneva making your ski holidays in Samoens easily accessible.

A free shuttle bus operates around Samoens and offers rides to the slopes, Morillon and Sixt, every 20 minutes.

Although Samoens village has an altitude of around 700m the ski area actually starts at Samoens 1600m. There is a large beginner’s area at Samoens 1600 ideal for those starting out.

Something sweet? Thierry Froissard, who has won a top national vocational award. In his shop/tearoom “A la Jaysinia”, the man who is so passionate about beauty and good taste admits that he is “still as enthusiastic as ever when it comes to creating top quality products to delight local clients and visitors alike”. This is an enthusiasm that he willingly shares with apprentice chefs. “I decided to move to Samoëns because of the lifestyle. It makes me want to contribute to the development of the village and work with the local people.” Gourmets venturing across the threshold into “A la Jaysinia” are never disappointed with what they find there – sorbets, raspberry gateaux, fatless sponges, Samoëns cakes, home-made chocolates and jams etc. Sweetness is the order of the day here.

ski info

Samoens is linked to the massive Grand Massif (with Les Carroz, Morillon and Flaine) and provides extensive skiing for all levels with virtually no queues. Not many places offer such a wide variety of skiing, and very few have such fantastic panoramic views over Mont-Blanc.

Additional ski fact info, main ski info in resort facts box at top of page.

Massif (all of above exc. Flaine)

No. of slopes 81

254 snow cannons, 1 snow park

Samoens is a little alpine village which is linked to the large Grand Massif ski area so you get the best of both worlds.

The Grand Massif Express lift transformed the Samoans ski area due to its fast and high capacity (8-seater) when it was built in 2003. Skiers can access the Grand Massif in less than 8 minutes, from the village (alt. 720 m) to the beginners’ slopes and the bottom of the pistes (1,600 m). The Chariande Express, a high-tech “highcapacity” chairlift, opened last winter. It links the plateau to the Tête des Saix (alt. 2,120 metres) in only 9 minutes. It’s the ideal and easy way to get to Flaine,

Morillon and Les Carroz d’Arâches.

The slopes above Samoens face due North, so above 1600 snow is fairly reliable. Thanks to its geographical location, the Grand Massif enjoys abundant, regular snowfalls throughout the season, and the area is well known for the quality of the snow in spring. Of course, 80% of the slopes are north-facing, allowing the snow to lie for longer and remain in good condition.

Skiing in Samoens couldn’t be easier with an excellent nursery slope area at Samoens 1600 for beginners to practise on with 7 lifts and 1 new travelator. The area for beginners is separated from the other sectors of the domain, to enable users to ski in complete safety, and avoid having users with different levels of experience on the same pistes. The restaurant terraces overlooking the pistes enable you to make the most of a relaxing rest in the sun while keeping an eye on your children. The kindergarten has a covered travelator to get to the top of the pistes.

New for 13/14: The “Septi Snake”, on a green piste, an easy slalom to learn and have fun. On the sides of the piste, you can try three “freestyle” features!

Intermediate and boarders will enjoy the 49 red pistes and 15 black pistes of the Grand Massif. The Grand Massif itself has extensive intermediate slopes with big lift networks.

For the more advanced there is also a testing terrain: The steep north-facing mogul slopes from the Tête des Saix, the central point of the entire Grand Massif system, down to Samoëns are particularly enjoyable. There is also extensive off-piste.

You cannot ski back to Samoens village from Samoens 1600 but you can ski down to Vercland where the old Saix gondola is between Samoens and Morillon using the ‘Velarge’ red run or ‘Grand Cret’ black run. From Vercland there is a free shuttle bus back to Samoens village just down the road. You can also ski back down to Morillon village on the ‘Diona’ red run, and again catch the shuttle bus back to nearby Samoens village.

Les Cascades piste - this 14 km piste takes you from the summit of Les Grandes Platières at 2,500 m down to the village of Sixt located 900 m further down the mountainside. A great descent through alpine meadows and forests on one of the finest pistes in the Alps. A forest ski run on the edge of the Sixt Fer-à-Cheval Nature Reserve where it’s not unusual to come across mountain goats. 14 km of quiet surroundings and breathtaking landscapes!

There is parking at the Grand Massif Express gondola so taking your car is no problem and with 800 spaces you shouldn’t have a problem finding somewhere to park. However please be aware that the Grand Massif Express car park is not accessible for vehicles over 2.40 m in height. Take care if your skis are stored vertically on your vehicle. Free parking.

Samoens Snow Report – 2004-2014 (10 season average)

Samoens and more generally the Grand Massif (Flaine) has always benefited from a superb snow record thanks to the microclimate resulting from the proximity of Mont Blanc. Snow cover on at least parts of the ski area is pretty much guaranteed from mid-December until late April. Samoens also benefits from North-facing slopes which greatly helps to retain snow longer. Here is the snow record data for Samoens. The first row shows the week for which the measurement applies eg. February 3 is the 3rd week in February. Top slopes shows the average snow cover in cm at the top of the ski area. Bottom Slopes shows the average snow cover in cm at the bottom of the ski area (this is generally where the nursery pistes are located). About 10 cm is generally enough to ski but it very much depends on what’s below ie. grass or more rocky surface.
