resort info

The resort of Oz en Oisans is set just above the pretty old village of Oz amidst fir trees. Oz was one of the last resorts to be built in the Alps (1989), and although purpose-built, it has a traditional village atmosphere with its attractive new chalets and apartment blocks built predominantly with wood and stone.

Placed between the Belledonne et Grandes Rousses mountain ranges, Oz en Oisans is made up of 10 hamlets and the resort of Oz Station, reaching from de 800-1350m. The hamlets, Oz Village, le Roberand, le Bessey, Sardonne, l’Ile d’Oz, le Boulangeard, le Pontonnier, la Beurrière, la Voûte, le Pré de l’Arche and l'Enversin are so widely scattered they make Oz one of the largest municipalities in the Oisans.

Well designed and traffic free (there is a large underground parking), Oz en Oisans in France is safe for children and much quieter than nearby bustling Alpe d’Huez.

The ski school, nursery slopes, main gondola lift, bars, restaurants, sport shops, supermarket, nursery and ice rink are all within a short walking distance of each other in Oz en Oisans ski resort. This makes Oz en Oisans the ideal resort for a hassle-free family holiday.

Discover what Oz en Oisans has to offer at the weekly tourist office’s mulled wine welcome drink and presentation of the resort: après-ski activities include ice skating snow shoe excursions, cinema, kids’ tournaments (snowmen making, tobogganing etc…).

Oz is easily accessed from Grenoble (55km) by the main trunk road, around 45 mins driving time.

Why Oz-en-Oisans?

·          Part of a massive snow-sure ski area

·          Ideal small and friendly resort for families and those seeking a peaceful base

·          Very convenient with all services within short walking distance

ski info

Part of the massive and snow-sure Grand Domaine /Alpe d'Huez ski area, Oz offers world class skiing (250km of pistes). It has two gondolas that take you onto the higher slopes in no time: one goes to Alpette above Vaujany, where further beginner slopes are; the other goes in two stages to the heart of the Alpe d'Huez ski area.

Already equipped with one of the largest snow production plants, the area now has a second automatic unit suppling a further 75km of slopes via 923 snow cannons. It's relatively extensive and covers the main runs above Alpe d'Huez, Vaujany and Oz.

From the summit of Pic Blanc ski area it offers at 3300m unique perspectives of the surrounding mountains to Italy and the Massif Central.

News 14/15:

The world's longest black run, La Sarenne now features 72 new snow-cannons, so the piste is now guaranteed to be skiable in its entirety all season. As long as the temperature is cold enough to make snow. It also now possible to descend it at night thanks to L.E.D lights that have been installed.

Additional ski facts, main ski area listed in box above

Local ski area Vaujany Oz

(1100m – 2800m)

No. of slopes 40

What makes this area so satisfying is its many-sided slopes. They face in all directions, so skiers can always find the best snow and conditions by simply following the sun! There are 4 sectors that make up the Grand Domaine – 3 in Alpe d’Huez and then the Vaujany/Oz sector. This sector consist of largely north-west facing slopes.

Oz has long been the starting point for climbs of the Massif des Grandes remains at the heart of Oisans, a country of mountains. The resort provides access to 240 km of slopes on skis between 1100 and 3330 meters above sea level. For experts you can take a series of black and red runs from the Pic Blanc at 3300m down the Vaujany village (you can catch the gondolas back up though to get back to Oz).

The skiing & snowboarding in Oz is spectacular with fantastic views all round from glaciers and forests to villages nestling in the valleys below. You can ski back home on a choice of gentle blue or red slopes.

Vaujany/Oz local ski area - this area extends from Oz to Vaujany & Alpe d 'Huez on 70 km runs from 1100 to 2800m. Taking shape on the west side, it has particularly pleasant sunshine. The slopes above Oz are probably the best area for skiing when snow is falling due to the tree-lined slopes.

There are some nursery slopes at the base of the mountain and further greens at the top of the Alpette gondola. Take the Poutran I&II gondola to Alpe d’Huez and here you will find no less than 20 green slopes all spread along the mountainside right above Alpe d’Huez. Quite an impressive area for beginners. There is a blue run down to the resort of Oz - Les Chevreuils - and snowmaking means that usually its no problem to ski back to the resort.

Directly above Oz there are some red runs or try the blue runs at Vaujanys Montfrais just off the top of the Alpette gondola. There are plenty of intermediate runs towards Alpe d’Huez and in an area called Signal. The variety of intermediate slopes is quite vast and in good snow conditions the variety of runs is difficult to beat.

Grand Domaine is also home to many black pistes towards Alpe d’Huez. There are quite a few blacks at Pic Blanc, the highest point at 3330m. Don’t leave without trying the longest black run in the Alps – the Sarenne which is over the other side of Alpe d’Huez. It’s a whopping 16km in length. You can ski this run by moonlight with a guide for around €65.

Highest vertical drop in the world: you can ski for a 2205m vertical, ending in Oz, without taking a lift; a dream of the most demanding skiers, it takes about 1h30. First check out the panorama from Pic Blanc at 3330m, where it’s said you can see a 1/5th of France. Then gather your courage for the legendary “Tunnel” Black run before skiing between the rocky outcrops of the “Les Rousses” Red.  Glide across the plateau of Alpette and the gentle Blue of “Chalets” before dropping onto the Black “La Fare” and its forested descent to L’Enversin d’Oz at 1125m.

Off-piste enthusiasts have an immense choice too, including a run with a vertical drop of 2600 metres.
