resort info

One of the best loved resorts in the Alps, Morzine scores on many points.  It's a charming, traditional village and yet linked in to one of the world's largest ski areas.  It's a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life and yet it's one of the closest ski resorts to the Channel and only an hour from Geneva.

Morzine is an unspoilt, historic ski resort dating back to the 16th century, with its own Gallic identity, yet there’s a wide choice of restaurants and bars for much livelier and varied apres ski than most resorts offer.

Savoyard style with its chalet style buildings, wooden facades, carved balconies and slate-covered roofs, Morzine offers more than 30 bistros and restaurants, including some of the best in the whole region. There are three discos, two cinemas, many bars and an ice-skating arena that hosts the world’s top skaters.

This artificial skating rink is also open for public skating and has a panoramic bar-restaurant. In addition a fitness centre with weights room, sauna and hot tub, has been installed in the Sports Centre. Sleigh rides are also available. The adventurous can try snowmobiling or ice climbing on frozen waterfalls in Morzine.

In April 2004, Morzine-Avoriaz’s ski-lifts received ISO 9001 certification hence a high standard and efficiency are guaranteed. Morzine was also voted 5th best ski resort in the world in the Daily Telegraph Travel Awards, 2001.

Ski Taxi - Want to tour the slopes or try something new? Need to meet friends on the mountain or to share time on the slopes with your family? Then try the taxi-ski!
This new service is aimed at non-skiers and seniors who might need help getting around on the slopes and who want to enjoy the thrill of skiing in complete safety!

New for winter 12/13, in nearby Avoriaz, Aquariaz is a brand new indoor/outdoor waterpark/swimming pool (30 mins drive):

142 Routes des Rennes
74110 Avoriaz

Phone: +33(0)4 50 74 24 42

Aquariaz has been designed as an aquatic paradise in the mountains featuring lush vegetation and rocks: a river with variable gentle current, a slidewinder (aquatic halfpipe), a water playhouse, a paddling pool, a large pool with climbing walls, massage benches and the must: an open-air spa heated to 34°C! This type of water park is found nowhere else in the mountains and features a 'hybrid' concept with natural tropical vegetation in mountain surroundings.

It is made up of three different worlds:

•    The first world, Water Playhouse, is for younger children and features geysers and pouring-water play equipment including water slides, water guns and a tipping bucket that pours out tens of litres of water at a time. This extends into a large paddling pool.

•    The second world, the Slidewinder, is for the most adventurous bathers who are looking for big thrills and an adrenaline buzz. More than 10 metres up, you sit in a rubber tube and slide down a halfpipe

•    The third world, in the central pool for bathers of all ages, is made up of three sections:
- A gently flowing river with water games (bubbles, jets and faster and slower sections) with two areas of bubble-massage seats along the way.
- A swimming pool, 1.5 metres (5 feet) deep.
- A 1.5m (5ft) deep pool below a climbing wall that extends for its entire length.

And not forgetting the outdoor Jacuzzi® with its uninterrupted view of the valley.

The Pléney gondola will be replaced with new lift equipment for winter 2013/14.  This key new lift will provide improved capacity and better access to the winter ski area and for summer Mountain Biking in Morzine. Ground level access to the top and bottom lift stations will make for quicker access and ease of use.

385 snow cannons in Les Gets/Morzine

The local Morzine-Les Gets sector covers all the mountains on one side of Morzine. It links the Pleney, Morzine, Nyon, Chevannes and Mont Chéry in Les Gets and offers more than 100km (65 miles) of ski runs for all abilities. Morzine ski resort has a large floodlit area with skiing, tubing and big air that remains open until 10pm.

Reaching Avoriaz from Morzine can be done easily by either a cable car from the hamlet of Les Prodains, reached by free ski-bus from Morzine, provides the quickest and most direct link to Avoriaz. Or alternatively you can take gondola from Morzine up to Super-Morzine, where you can work your way up through the lift system to Avoriaz, or over to hamlet of Les Lindarets for access to Chatel and other resorts in Portes du Soleil.

There are lots of lightly wooded slopes in the local Morzine area, so bad weather rarely causes a problem. You can find open areas higher up.

Beginners will enjoy the conveniently located wide village nursery slopes which are provided with many snow cannons to keep the snow at its best. Good progression runs are to be found in the Nyon sector and there are lots of options on Le Pleney including a great blue cruise from the top to the valley lift station.

Confident intermediates will enjoy the challenging reds down from Chamossiere and the fine steep runs on the Mont-Chery. For the less confident intermediate you are also well catered for. Le Pleney sector is great for parties with mixed abilities with a blue option to match a red option. The slopes down to Les Gets from Le Pleney are relatively easy (although the slopes face south).

More challenging pistes and famous runs such as the Swiss wall and the world cup downhill black will keep the expert skier happy.  If you venture across to Les Gets, the black runs off the back of the Mont Chery are quite challenging. If you are looking for off-piste then there is plenty to keep you occupied.

Snowboarders will love the freeride terrain and parks available with the best super pipe in Europe situated in Avoriaz.

A new fun slope is now open underneath the Nabor chairlift at the top of Pleney. Ideal for youngsters to try boardercross. At almost 800m long, you can fly around raised bends, get air on the gentle bumps and slalom between penguins, seals and bears. During the February school holidays the eskimo village will be open for face-painting and free sweeties.

360s, scary reverse jumps, scratch... Want to try an impossible jump but you’re too scared? Now you can ... by landing on a huge airbag! The Big Airbag is at the foot of the Pleney between Mas-Verjus button lift and the ESF Espace Ski Enfants. It cushions your fall once you’ve launched yourself from the ramp a some distance up the slope.

Big Airbag prices: 2€ per jump; 7€ per 30 minutes; 12€ per hour.

If you are coming back from Avoriaz, then you cannot ski back. You need to take the Super Morzine gondola back into the village centre. If you are skiing from the Les Gets side then you can ski back to the village centre on greens, blues or reds...or take the gondolas down.

The expert park is at 'Arare' with an airbag. Beginners and intermediates should head to 'La Chapelle' which is a 500m long park. 'Parkway' is good for beginners and children (including traffic lights for safety and mini jumps). 'The Stash' (concept came from America) has routes cut through the forest with wooden elements bringing all-mountain riding and freestyle together. The last park is 'Lil'Stash' which is a mini version for children. There is also a super pipe and boardercross.

Morzine Snow Report – 2004-2014 (10 season average)

Here is the snow record data for Morzine. The first row shows the week for which the measurement applies eg. February 3 is the 3rd week in February. Top slopes shows the average snow cover in cm at the top of the ski area. Bottom Slopes shows the average snow cover in cm at the bottom of the ski area (this is generally where the nursery pistes are located). About 10 cm is generally enough to ski but it very much depends on what’s below ie. grass or more rocky surface.
