Summer ski in Tignes
Skiing doesn't stop just because it's summer! Our resorts with slopes set on a glacier are often open for business and have a plethora of other activities on offer too. You can do summer skiing in the French Alps mainly in Tignes in the Tarentaise region but Les 2 Alpes does have some limited skiing available in May and early June. These glacier skiing areas benefit from the low temperatures at altitude, especially at night, so you can expect smooth groomed runs in the morning and soft bumps later on. They're usually fairly compact, with a mix of blue and red slopes, but you’ll also find the occasional black.
Please note: Summer skiing is normally at its best in June and early July due to snow conditions. Conditions on the glacier can deteriorate quickly in late July and August with unseasonably hot temperatures and this could lead to an early closure of the ski area. Sadly it is difficult to predict this until quite late in the day. If you are looking to summer ski, June is your best time.
Tignes glacier rises from 2700m to 3600m and boasts 20km of ski runs, 10 lifts, 750m of vertical, a snow park and an ice grotto not to mention having breathtaking views. From its summit of 3656m, the Grand Motte glacier dominates the surrounding area. Grande Motte glacier is open during the summer months allowing freestylers to practice in the snowpark, or watch the professionals complete their summer training. For the beginners amongst you, the soft summer snow is ideal.
In addition to skiing in summer, Tignes also offers you the possibility of pleasant glacier hikes at altitude, while benefiting from the ski lifts. You can try a glacier hike and try to climb the La Grande Motte glacier with a professional guide. You will be in the heart of the Vanoise National Park, in a lunar landscape, a perfect contrast to the richness of the incredible flora and fauna that can be discovered in the park.
Opening of the glacier for summer skiing: tbc, usually June and July.
Opening of the lifts for hiking and mountain bikes: 25th June 2022 (closing date 26th August) - 2023 to be confirmed
Les 2 Alpes has one of the highest ski areas in the world, from 2800m to 3600m. In May and June, the glacier is open for a short while, mainly for ski racing, professionals and ski teaching (open from May 28th 2023 to June 17th 2023). Summer skiing takes place in the morning, leaving the rest of the day for more traditional summer activities in Les 2 Alpes. Pedestrians can enjoy an amazing view from the Ecrin Belvedere footbridge and visit the ice cave on the glacier.
