What will EES border checks be like at Eurotunnel LeShuttle? A guide for UK travellers

Saturday, 11, October, 2025

From 12 October 2025, the EU is introducing a new digital border system called the Entry/Exit System (EES). If you're planning to travel to the French Alps via Eurotunnel (LeShuttle) this winter, you might be wondering what this means for you.

At Peak Retreats, we’ve done the legwork to help you know what to expect. Our team visited Eurotunnel to see exactly how the new system will work, so we can give you the clearest and most reassuring advice possible.

What is the EES?

The EES is a new EU system designed to strengthen border security across the Schengen area. It applies to non-EU citizens, including British travellers, and involves registering biometric data. This means a photo and fingerprints will be taken when crossing the border.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • It is not a visa and does not replace your passport
  • You will still need your passport stamped for the first six months
  • Children under 12 will not need to give fingerprints, but everyone will have their photo taken
  • The process is expected to take around 2 minutes per person travelling
  • There will be a phased introduction of the scheme, with 10% of travellers being required to register their biometric information in October 2025, up to 100% from April 2026.

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about EES…

Do I need to do anything before I travel?

No. Everything happens at the border. There is nothing to register or prepare in advance. Just make sure you have your passport ready and allow a extra time at the terminal, especially during peak travel dates.

How will EES work at Eurotunnel/LeShuttle?

Eurotunnel has been working hard to prepare for the EES rollout. In fact, they have built Europe’s largest temporary structure to manage the new process. Here is how it will work when you arrive:

1. Traffic light system

As you approach the port, a traffic light system will guide you to the correct lane. This helps manage queues and directs you to your assigned EES stand.

2. Dedicated lanes

FlexiPlus passengers have a separate lane to help speed things up

Lorries and coaches are routed separately to avoid adding to waiting times

3. Biometric Registration

Once you reach your EES stand:

·         You will need to exit your vehicle

·         Each person will scan their passport and complete the biometric process (photo and fingerprints)

·         It should take about 2 minutes per person

·         There will be members of staff on hand to give assistance where needed

·         After that, you get back in your car and continue through passport control as usual

Will this cause delays?

It is possible, especially during busy periods like school holidays. But Eurotunnel’s setup is designed to keep things moving smoothly. Our advice is to allow extra time, stay relaxed, and know that this is a one-time registration.

Is EES a one-off process?

No. Once you have completed an EES registration, it will be valid for 3-years, however, you will still be required to provide a fingerprint OR photo each time you enter or exist the Schengen area.
