My first ski holiday in La Plagne: a teenager's perspective

Friday, 04, July, 2025

Erin, who also did her work experience with us, headed to La Plagne in April 2025 with friends and family. Here's how she got on in the resort...

The skiing

La Plagne along with neighbouring Les Arcs make up the Paradiski ski area, the second largest connected skiing area in the world. The ski area is huge, with 225km of slopes in La Plagne, and the whole area covers 425km of slopes. Although the Paradiski area is extremely popular, due to its size the slopes aren’t too busy - crowds disperse fast.

Almost all our group had a lift pass covering just the La Plagne area and were still discovering new slopes by the end of a long week of skiing. La Plagne’s skiing is extremely varied; there are excellent facilities for beginners and novices.

There is brilliant skiing for experts to be found higher up, for instance the Le Rochu and Bellecôte black runs. We loved La Plagne’s smooth, wide blues like Trieuse and Rhodos and found the reds, such as Sources and Inversens, challenging and exhilarating.

We had ski school in the mornings with ESF, and our instructor showed us some brilliant runs as well as pointing out some famous mountains.

My friends and I really enjoyed the fun runs and racing down the lovely blue slopes.

There are a few fun slopes in the ski area, including the Buffalo Kids run and Tunnel, which features a tunnel that links two different sectors bringing you from Roche de Mio into the main Bellecôte bowl. In the tunnel, music is played through speakers to create a fun atmosphere.

Plagne Soleil, where our group stayed, is at 2,050m, with the top height being 3,250m, meaning the snow is reliable all season. 70% of the skiing is over 2,000m altitude. We visited at the beginning of April and had fabulous weather and brilliant snow all week.

The accommodation

Our group stayed in apartments at the White Pearl in Plagne Soleil. The location is extremely convenient, as the walk to the slopes is only a few minutes, and the ski hire shop and ski school meeting points are also just a short walk from the White Pearl.

There are great facilities including a pool, spa area, gym and ski lockers. The pool was great as it was a good size with both indoor and outdoor sections. There are also many communal areas such as a pool table, table football, and the White Moon, the residence bar. The teenagers in our group enjoyed playing pool. There is also a lounge area with sofas, where there was a table tennis table and we played board games in the evening.

Activities

During our stay, we tried out Aerolive, an open-sided cable car which departs from Roche de Mio at 2,739m and arrives at Live 3000 at 3,080m. The experience was thrilling and a real adrenaline rush.

In terms of après-ski, our favourite slope-side bar/restaurant was Monica’s in Plagne Soleil, where the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We liked to meet at Monica's after ski school for a hot chocolate or grenadine to share stories of our morning before deciding where to have our picnic lunch and where to ski in the afternoon. Underneath the restaurant was a sports bar showing Canal Plus and Sky Sports, with a small bar and some arcade games as well as sofas and chairs for watching sports.

We just had to have a snowball fight whilst we were there, and this was thoroughly enjoyed by all the teens and the younger children too.

Getting There

We drove to the Alps, opting to take the Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais, then drove to Reims before driving to resort the next day. We set off at around 5pm on the Friday and arrived in resort at around 3pm the next day. Although it is a long journey, my brother and I entertained ourselves with games and music, which made it feel much shorter.
