Mountain biking in Les Deux Alpes with Peak Retreats

For several years the resort has put mountain biking into consideration when managing tracks and paths, organising competitions, the Tour de France, and in the use of the winter ski lifts.  It has developed to such an extent that today there are action-packed mountain bike events throughout the summer months.  Les Deux Alpes events include CrankWorx (which is now one single event along with Le Mondial du VTT) from 6th-14th July 2013; Mountain of Hell from 19th - 21st July 2013.  Oisans events include UCI World Cup and French Cup the Traversee de l’Oisans MTB XC Marathon.

For summer 2012 Les Deux Alpes had increased the number of its routes 31 (28 downhill and 5 cross country) and the number of lifts 10. There is 100km of slopes between 3200m and 700m. There is also now a shuttle bus linking Freney, Auris and l’Alpe d’Huez with Les Deux Alpes.  There are 2 maintained areas for summer downhill mountain biking: the Pied Moutet area and the Jandri area.

1 Bike Park with four cross, slopestyle, northshore, walls, tables & dirt lines.

Opening of the MTB slopes from June-end of August 2013.

The resort has many ski lifts available to take mountain bikers and haul them up to the summits.  There are also other easy or more challenging circuits such as “Aiguilles Rouges”, a technical and difficult circuit where it is necessary to be accompanied.  There are more than 100km of marked paths. Detailed mountain bike guide maps are available in the resort.

Mountain bike hire is available throughout the resort. Save 20% on top quality bike hire with our Sport 2000 partner in Les 2 Alpes.

MTB in Oisans
Oisans hosts spectacular mountain bike competitions such as "Megavalanche" (the longest MTB downhill race in the world, starting on the Alpe-d’Huez glacier and finishing 30 km and 2 800 metres further down, in the centre of the village of Allemont) or the “Mountain of Hell”, a free ride downhill race in Les 2 Alpes.

Cycling in Oisans
Oisans is also synonymous with legendary Tour de France mountain stages. Alpe-d’Huez, Les 2 Alpes and Bourg-d’Oisans have left their mark on this race, and are part of its living legend. The most renowned cycling races in the Alps (including the famous "Marmotte") are put on for the Oisans Trophy.

Mountain biking in the Chamonix valley
For the past 3 years the Compagnie du Mont Blanc have made significant improvements on the sites in the valley to offer mountain bikers more tracks to practice their favourite sport, aware of the ever increasing demand.

The Balme area (Vallorcine) is particularly suited to this sport, so this year they have focused on the creation of a new track off the Autannes chairlift.

Here is up to date information (as of August 2012) on mountain bike trails and areas in the valley:
Balme: 3 tracks
Piste de l’Ours Black track: from the top of the Vallorcine gondola down to Vallorcine.
Piste Océane Blue track: from the top of the Charamillon gondola back down to Le Tour (Currently closed but due to open)
Piste des Marmottes Green track: a new track from the top of the Autannes chairlift down to Charamillon (opening in August)

Bike patrol is on site from June to mid September.

Flégère: 1 track not currently maintained but with open access.
Red track: which descends down to Le Praz.

The Compagnie du Mont Blanc has invested more than € 80 000 in recent years on the creation of mountain bike trails but it is clear that despite the massive investment, it is not able to offer a suitable mountain bike area on this site. The decision has been made to waive any further investment on this site for mountain biking and focus on sites of Balme and Les Houches.

Les Houches: No specific mountain bike tracks but a number of mountain bike trails are accessible.
Brévent: No specific mountain bike tracks but a number of mountain bike trails are accessible.

The Compagnie du Mont Blanc in partnership with the LH-SG (Prarion - Bellevue / Les Houches - St-Gervais) are currently working on the new substantial plans for 2013. The Compagnie du Mont Blanc and the LH-SG are investing in the Balme and Les Houches sites to make the two sites dedicated to both amateur and professional mountain bikers.
