La Norma Resort Information

Although a purpose-built resort, La Norma was built in harmony with the surrounding tree-covered mountains. It's surrounding slopes are peaceful and uncrowded.

The Tourist Office organises entertainment for all - find out what at the weekly Sunday evening get-together - and the informal après ski in the relaxed bars and restaurants is excellent.

La Norma is situated at 1350m on a picturesque tree-covered plateau. It has magnificent views of the Vanoise Massif, high above the river Arc. The wooden chalets and apartments seamlessly blend with the surroundings.

La Norma village is at the base of the slopes so there’s no need for a car – and if there’s enough snow you can even jump on your skis and make your way straight down to the lifts.

Non-skiers can enjoy a range of attractions from snowshoe outings and dog-sledge rides to outdoor baths. Popular with French families, La Norma holds the ‘Famille Plus Montagne’ label for its superb facilities for children.

On the edge of the Parc National de la Vanoise, La Norma is an incredibly easy resort to reach. It’s less than 10 minutes’ drive from the motorway exit near the TGV train station of Modane (four hours from Paris by train), and it’s right opposite the Fréjus tunnel to Italy.

La Norma has been rated by clients amongst Peak Retreats’ top resorts for value for money - and it’s easy to see why when you check out the price of accommodation, lift passes, ski school, local bars and restaurants.

Peak Retreats features self-catered apartments in La Norma. The 3* 'Les Balcons d'Anais' offer a convenient location overlooking the slopes and provide the ideal base for a La Norma ski holiday.

Located on a north-facing slope, La Norma has long lasting snow and artificial snow-making facilities so everyone can ski from the peak back to the village. Nursery slopes are next to the centre while higher up the mountain, a very long green run through the forests will delight beginners and even more experienced skiers.

New for 2018/19 Unlimited skiing in La Norma and Valfréjus! There are now 135km slopes (instead of 65km in La Norma alone) on this pass that await you using a free regular shuttle bus connection between the two resorts. You also get 1 day of skiing in each resort within the Haute Maurienne Vanoise Area (Aussois, Val Cenis, Bessans, Bonneval sur Arc) PLUS unlimited access to the Nordic ski domains (Aussois-Val Cenis Sardières, Val Cenis Bramans, Bessans).

La Norma has a north-west orientation combined with good snowfall - and careful maintenance of the ski area and snowmaking produces good skiing conditions until the end of the season.

La Norma’s Mélezet gondola and detachable La Repose chair allow pedestrians to access the high altitude areas for a magnificent panoramic view of the Massif de la Vanoise.

La Norma is a great family resort with lots of easy runs for people to learn to ski or snowboard on. On the flip side, there are plenty of red runs to keep intermediates happy at the same time. As well as La Norma, there’s skiing close by at Aussois, Valfréjus, Orelle/Val Thorens and the 3 Valleys.

La Norma local area (65km) - 13 lifts, 27 slopes, 130 snow cannons

Beginners are well looked after here, with a short green nursery run at the snow base area and two further blue runs to progress on - all at the base of the main lifts. You can also take either of the main lifts from the centre to access many more green slopes. The Melezet gondola takes you to 2000m where there are a couple of green and blue runs. One of these links with the Repose area. From the centre, the Repose chair takes you up to 1800m to the Plateau de la Repose where again there are various blue and green runs. There’s a very long tree-lined green run called Ste Anne which takes you right back down from 1800m to resort level. La Norma is very well laid out for beginners. And you don’t have to stay at resort level to learn, which is bonus: there should be great snow conditions from 1800m or 2000m, along with some great views across the valley too.

Intermediates will find good wide blues and challenging red runs. The majority of red runs are located above 2000m.

Although there’s only one black run (but lots of red runs), off-piste opportunities are extensive. La Norma has a slalom stadium and a snow-park for freestyle enthusiasts.

Snowboarders will enjoy the conditions and rides through the La Norma forest.

To get back to the resort from 1800m or 2000m you have a choice of the green Ste Anne run on the Repose side or the Forêt red run on the Melezet side.

There are connections on most days via a shuttle coach from La Norma to the Orelle cable car (15km). This high capacity gondola linking the Maurienne Valley with Val Thorens and the 3 Vallées is ideal for all advanced skiers who want to enjoy top-level skiing in the largest and certainly one of the best ski domains in the world, with 600km of pistes.

Between Saint Michel and Modane - and only six kilometres from the AutoRoute - Orelle could not be easier to access and has an excellent free parking facility.

There are regular connections via a shuttle coach to the 3 Vallées via the Orelle cable car on Thursdays, to Valfréjus on Tuesdays and to Aussois on Wednesdays. Book the previous day before noon at the tourist office. Ski safaris to Val Thorens and La Grave can also be organised.
