Family skiing with Peak Retreats

Best resorts for family ski holidays in France

The variety of slopes, family-friendly accommodation, welcoming resorts and brilliant ESF ski school make France a great destination for a family ski holiday.

We specialise in the French Alps, and have a whole range of smaller resorts with excellent skiing that are perfect for families looking for an authentic French Alpine skiing experience. As many of our team are parents themselves, we know what will make a difference to your family ski trip. Plus we're ABTA bonded for holiday packages so you can travel with confidence.

Here's our pick of resorts that we think suit families well - whether you've got adrenaline-seeking teens or more cautious little ones and whether you're seasoned family skiers or hitting the slopes for the first time together.

If you want to talk about these options, or any of our other resorts then get in touch, we can help you find a ski holiday that suits your family.

Take the pressure off! Our ski holidays come with a Eurotunnel crossing with free FlexiPlus upgrade except at some school holiday weeks (supplement applies on peak dates). FlexiPlus really suits families: if you’re running late, simply take the next available shuttle on the day you're booked to travel.

FlexiPlus lounges are heaven for children too, where they can choose their own snacks for the journey.

Want to know more? Find out why we love Eurotunnel FlexiPlus.

Enjoy 8 nights for the price of 7 in selected properties for Christmas week. Available on selected properties, but all are great choices for families: luxury or four-star, comfortable and spacious.

LA ROSIERE

Why La Rosière is perfect for families:  Sitting at 1850m, La Rosière is high enough to ensure good snow and its 198km of slopes mean there's lots to explore. Children (and parents if we're honest!) love the 1km long Petit St Bernard fun track with jumps, bumps and bells to ring. Beginners and intermediates have plenty of blues to ski while the secured free-ride area with new red runs opened up a whole new mountainside of more challenging skiing for the 2018/19 season. For family-friendly après, head to the ice rink to watch the Tigres Blancs ice hockey team play - the atmosphere is brilliant!

Where to stay: There's a wide choice of self-catered chalet apartments many with great facilities like indoor pools for some post-skiing family downtime. We particularly like Les Cimes Blanches and Le Hameau de Barthelemy for style.

VAL CENIS

Why Val Cenis is perfect for families: Val Cenis's north-facing slopes ensure good snow coverage. It's ideal for beginners and intermediates with green and blue runs down through the trees. It boasts the longest green run in Europe (the 10km long L'Escargot) which is great for building children's confidence. Skiing this together at the end of a first week on the slopes is realistic and feels like a real achievement. There's a Mickey Mouse themed fun track, which starts right by a family (and wallet)-friendly hot chocolate stop (La Creperie des Glaces), where you can also grab sausages and chips at lunchtime. The viewpoint at the top of the ski area, overlooking the Lac du Mont Cenis, is another must-do, perfect for a family selfie.

Where to stay: Les Chalets de Flambeau apartments are right at the bottom of the slopes and have an indoor pool. There's a bakery, the ESF ski school meeting points, a lift and bar/restaurant all pretty much on your doorstep.

TIGNES 1800

Why Tignes 1800 is perfect for families: The Tignes/Val d'Isère ski area is huge (300km of slopes) so there's plenty to offer more experienced skiers, but families are also really well looked after. Tignes 1800 has a large beginner's area with well-marked zones and slopes in three graded levels - ideal for families hitting the slopes together for the first time. For something different to do in the evening, book a meal at the Yurt Village. Cosy up around an open fire in a snowy clearing in the trees before heading into the yurts for Savoyard specialities, definitely a magical experience! From a practical perspective, Tignes 1800 has a well-stocked (and much complimented) grocery shop with a great deli counter.

Where to stay: Luxury apartments at Kalinda are right in the heart of Tignes 1800. The apartments have a large indoor pool and a separate baby pool. They are at the foot of the gondola that links Tignes 1800 to the higher parts of Tignes.

SAMOENS

Why Samoëns is perfect for families: Families with non-skiers in the party, or those accompanied by grandparents who perhaps don’t ski as much will love Samoëns. This beautiful village with a market square, historic church has quaint narrow streets with cafés and little boutiques. It's the perfect place for a wander while the rest of the family hit the slopes. The Grand Massif Express gondola takes skiers to 1600m and the vast Grand Massif ski area (265km of slopes). At the top you can play and learn in the brilliant beginners' area; children can try the easy slalom, freestyle features and a fun track, the Forêt Myztérieuze de ZiziPanpan! The beginners' chairlift even has special child-friendly seats for young skiers. From 1600m, more experienced skiers can head over to Les Carroz, Morillon and Flaine to explore the extensive Grand Massif area.

Where to stay: The luxury apartments at Les Chalets de Layssia are in a great location in the heart of Samoëns and just 50m from the shuttle bus stop to gondola. They have an indoor pool and a separate baby pool. There's also a hot tub, sauna, steam room and spa on site.
