  • A decent size Nordic Park - classic, skating and snowshoeing

Chamrousse Resort Information

Chamrousse is a relatively small ski resort and at an altitude of 2250m it dominates Grenoble. This resort is located south of the Belledonne Massif to Oisans, Vercors and Chartreuse, in the Northern Alps. The village of Chamrousse is attractively placed offering stunning views and is surrounded by trees allowing for forest skiing. A ski resort where nature reigns, it will ensure you make the most of what it offers in this fabulous setting. A relatively short drive from Grenoble, it is one of the most accessible ski resorts in the Alps.

Chamrousse is a varied alpine ski area where it's fun to ski among fir trees, a large and preserved Nordic plateau looking like a small Canada, a 360°C panorama with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and Grenoble. It extends on two levels: Chamrousse 1650 (Recoin) and Chamrousse 1750-1700 (Roche Béranger - Bachat-Bouloud) linked by ski slopes and forest tracks, for an overall area of 1300 hectares. The resort was built in the forest, offering an outstanding overview of the Grenoble valley. At 2250m, the Croix de Chamrousse is the highest point.

There are many activities in Chamrousse - downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledging, snow games, dog sledding, ice diving, snowmobiling, and ice skating... activities for all tastes and ages to escape and take a big breath of fresh air.

Chamrousse is the first resort in Isere to get the Flocon Vert label (in 2017), which guarantees the sustainable commitment of mountain resorts.

CHAMROUSSE SKI AREA

This resort is famous for being the host of the winter Olympic Games in 1968 when the famous French skier Jean-Claude KILLY won three gold medals. Chamrousse was also a stage of the “Tour de France” in 2001. One of the resort’s attractions is its beautiful sunsets.

The ski resort is made up of two villages:

  • Chamrousse Recoin - Located at CHAMROUSSE 1650m is convenient for athletic skiing
  • Chamrousse Roche-Béranger - Located at CHAMROUSSE 1750m is more suitable for family skiing

Also, each area is more suitable for certain skiers:

  • Chamrousse 1650 – Recoin: area is better for confirmed skiers with mainly red slopes
Chamrousse 1750 – Roche-Béranger: area is better for intermediate skiers with mainly blue slopes
Chamrousse 1700 – Village du Bachat (former Domaine de l’Arselle): area is better for beginner skiers/families with mainly green slopes

Skiers can pass from one area to another on the slopes. The resort also offers interesting opportunities such as night skiing.

Chamrousse holds an efficient lift system which means that there are rarely any queues, and offers access to excellent pistes for beginners and intermediates, with a number of off-piste runs for the more advanced.

At La Croix de Chamrousse (2250m), take some time to enjoy the 360° panorama: a magical view of all surrounding mountain ranges (Oisans, Vercors and Chartreuse), and of Grenoble and its valleys. From there, you can reach all parts of the resort.

CHAMROUSSE SKIING

CHAMROUSSE BEGINNERS

The mini-domaine area allows beginners to discover skiing at a low cost and in area with adapted lifts and slopes.

In Chamrousse, the mini-domaine skipass is valid:

  • In 3 parts of the resort (Chamrousse 1650, 1700 and 1750)
  • On 1 detachable chairlift with a ski conveyor mat: Arselle
  • On 4 drag lifts: Aiguille, Croisette, Lauze and Totem
  • Access to the playful area Family Park - Teo's mountain

It allows you to ski peacefully on green and blue slopes.

CHAMROUSSE INTERMEDIATES

The majority of green and blue runs are also found at 1700 and 1750 so this sector is ideal for those progressing from beginner to intermediate level.  As you near the 1650 side there are plenty of red runs to challenge your new-found intermediate status!

CHAMROUSSE EXPERTS

The black runs at Chamrousse are located in the 1650 sector - long runs from the top of the mountain at 2250m, or just further down. The 1650 area is more geared towards the good intermediate and experts (however there are some nursery slopes at the bottom). This is the most wooded part of the area, with skiing among fir trees.

Some areas are left ungroomed to enable skiers looking for powder to practice safely. In Chamrousse 1650, you’ll also find the famous runs from the 1968 Olympics (six events here witnessed the arrival of some great new ski champions). You can start from the summit of the ski area, called la Croix de Chamrousse, and ski them down to the heart of the resort.

CHAMROUSSE SNOWBOARDERS

Snowboarders will enjoy Chamrousse’s new facilities and snowparks especially designed for them such as the “Sunset Park” or the “Kid’s park”.

The “Sunset Park” is composed of a boardercross and a slopestyle. This 6.3-hectare area is fitted with modules for all tastes and levels.

The "Kid’s park" is a snowpark area especially designed and dedicated to children.

Snowmaking is available on 40 hectares of the Chamrousse slopes.

CHAMROUSSE NORDIC CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

Chamrousse Nordic Park consists of classic, skating and snowshoeing.

The Nordic ski area in Chamrousse opens in early December.

Please note, these Pound Sterling prices are for indication only. They will fluctuate based on Euro/£ exchange rate. Please call us for the latest prices.

Other lift passes on offer (to buy locally in resort in Euros):

If you wish to book only half day or a day pass, or perhaps a few days consecutive or non-consecutive (Peak Retreats usually only pre-book 6+ days passes), then these can be bought in resort at the lift pass office, in €'s. This may suit those who only ski a few times during the week or who only want to ski the immediate local area rather than the full area (there are usually various lift passes on offer that cover different parts of the ski area). Each resort usually has a beginner's pass too which covers a small area in which to learn, which may be all you need for a few days as a beginner (some areas are even free). Prices can be found on the tourist office website if you need a guide.

For the beginners pass (mini domaine) in Chamrousse, you can use:

  • Recoin: Aiguille, Col de Balme, Roche
  • Béranger: Lauze, Totem, Arselle chairlift, Croisette
  • Access to the playful area 'Family Park - Teo's mountain'

It allows you to ski peacefully on green and blue slopes.

Chamrousse Ski School

Chamrousse group ski school (pre-bookable)

Pre-book your Chamrousse ESF group ski school with Peak Retreats. Find out more about Peak Retreats ski school

Group ski school for children is available to book from 4 years to 13 years, in Chamrousse, with Peak Retreats. Children can learn to snowboard from 7 years+. Please ask about booking lessons for 3 year olds.

For ski school times and prices, please download the ski extras form from the 'Helpful links' further down the page. Please note these are just guiding prices. Please call us for the latest prices.

Please note that lesson times are subject to change right until the last minute - you will be advised. Outside French school holidays the ski school reserves the right to cancel group lessons should numbers be insufficient.  For peak periods - Christmas, New Year, February half-term and Easter - we strongly recommend that you book as early as possible and in any case at least 6 weeks prior to the required dates. Morning lessons tend to get booked up first and therefore we may only be able to offer afternoon classes within 6 weeks of departure. In some resorts English speaking instructors may not always be available, particularly at peak times.

We cannot always guarantee that prices will be cheaper than in resort. When ski packs prices are calculated, the currency is bought at the exchange rates that apply at the time. You can be assured that once you have booked your extras, if the pound depreciates, you will not be charged more for your ski packs, enabling you to budget for your holiday in advance.

Chamrousse private lessons (not pre-bookable, book direct):

Individual tuition can only be purchased directly from the ESF ski school. Peak Retreats cannot pre-book these. Private lessons usually start from 2 years old and have no maximum age.

How to book:
You can book online with ESF Chamrousse or contact them by phone on 0033 4 76 89 94 25 It is advisable to book before you go and in good time as instructors get very busy, especially in Peak times.

Prices vary from resort to resort but are around €40-80 per 1 hour lesson for 1 or 2 people (the more people you have the cheaper it usually is so you can split the cost). Most resorts offer a choice of 1 hour, 1.5 hours or 2 hour lessons. These may be in the morning or afternoon and are usually at select times. If you only fancy just one private lesson, this is usually fine. Otherwise, you can book a course of private lessons over as many days (consecutive or non-consecutive) as you'd like. However, it is more cost-effective to book group lessons for the week (which we pre-book).

Chamrousse non-skiing childcare (not pre-bookable, book direct)

Chamrousse has acquired the Famille Plus label for its childcare facilities. Please view here for more information on the Famille Plus label.

'Les Marmots' creche and kids club (Chamrousse 1750)

  • A group of 3 to 6 years (-1 days) (20 places)

They offer nurseries activities every day. The medium group has a large terrace in order to enjoy the sun. Equipped with "Famille Plus" certification label.

How to book:
Please contact them direct for prices and to book. It is advisable to book before you go and in good time as spaces get filled quickly, especially in Peak times.

Chamrousse Après-ski, Bars & Restaurants

The après-ski in Chamrousse is rather quiet. It has a small selection of bars and restaurants and previous clients have recommended Chez Igor et Doudou as a great bar/restaurant with a very friendly atmosphere. To broaden the range of places to eat out or for those looking for a more lively après-ski visiting the nearby city of Grenoble would be recommended.
