Oisans - Montgenevre

The resort

The commune is made out of two blooming villages: Montgenèvre located on the pass and the hamlet of Les Alberts, at its feet, doorstep to the Clarée valley. Montgenèvre dates back to antiquity. Even though it is 1860 m high, it benefits from an exceptionally high level of sun due to its Mediterranean climate (300 sunny days per year). More

As a result of its very special location, Montgenèvre lies at the heart of an impressive heritage of military architecture. As you walk along looking for a restaurant or shop, remember that as you walk down the Rue de l’Eglise, you are actually on the Via Domitia, surveyed and created in 120 BC on the orders of the Roman General Domitius Ahenobarbus.

In 1875, Mont Chaberton reached 3,138metres into the sky! In 1898, the Italian government – now allied with Germany and Austria as part of the Triplice – decided to open a route to the summit and what would become the Fortress in the Clouds (Fort des Nuages).

In 1947, Mont Chaberton became France territory, and today a marked geological trail leads walkers to the viewpoint interpretation table on its summit...still as flat as it was in 1898.

Turin is only about 100 kilometres (63 miles) from Montgenèvre. Turins is Italy’s original capital, it became the country’s industrial capital before hosting the Winter Olympics in 2006. It is now the uncontested Italian capital.

The Turismo Torino e Provincia tourist offices are open every day:

Piazza Castello/via Garibaldi from 09:00 to 19:00,

Porta Nuova Station from 09:30 to 19:00

Turin is only 1 hour by train from the station at Oulx (17 km from Montgenèvre).

There are many markets in Turin, including the famous Porta Palazzo. . And

don’t miss the Saturday flea market, better known as the Balôn.

At 5:30 on Saturday afternoons, you can take a fantastic guided tour on

foot through the streets of the city centre to discover the many faces of Turin, from the most famous to the most unexpected.
