Les Deux Alpes Snow Trail by Lafuma

Les 2 Alpes, international resort is setting up a winter trail... 20€ for each itinerary. This price includes: Registration, the cable car journey to the start line, a hot meal.
Les 2 Alpes, international resort is setting up a winter trail... Following in the footsteps of the Maratour des glaciers (The Glacier Marathon), and the Défi de l'Oisans (the Oisans Challenge), the resort is launching « Les 2 Alpes Night Snow Trail by Lafuma ». In order to make the very most of the 2 Alpes resort, this trail will take place in the evening, with the race starting at 5.15pm. Two different races are on offer in order to cater for the casual runner (the 10 kilometre race is perfect for them,) and the regular trailers, who will take great pleasure in the 18 kilometre race. The originality of these two races lies in the fact that the race departure will take place at 2200 metres in altitude. The other novel point is that the race profile will be mostly descending (700m of altitude descent for the short course and 1140m of altitude descent for the long course). The route will follow ski slopes (a linking path) for the first four kilometres before sloping back down to the bright lights of the resort on the Demoiselles track. Once in the resort, the 10 km competition will return directly to the Tourism Office by the lower slopes in the resort. However, the 18km race competitors will discover the Molière forest by a cross-country ski slope with its singular trails ...even at night the panoramic view will be amazing thanks to the bright lights of Auris! A long climb brings us near the restaurant ‘Kanata’, on the Vallée Blanche side of the resort, and continues until the Alpe de Venosc. After a short crossing of the resort ‘by night’, the competitors return to the lower slopes, before arriving on the Place des 2 Alpes.

ski info

As one of the very few internationally renowned resorts in our programme, Les 2 Alpes was chosen for its high altitude ski area - one of the highest in the world. It boasts an excellent snow record, well above average sunshine conditions and an amazing 223km of snowsure ski slopes.

The ski area is well suited to all standards of skiers/boarders and most are above treeline. The pistes are separated into 3 areas: Pied-Moutet, Mont de Lans village and the high summits (3,600m glacier). There are 2 sides to Les 2 Alpes, the main side with the glacier and majority of pistes and the Vallee Blanche side opposite with blues and reds. The main slopes are all above the tree-line.

Skiing is available to all, both beginners and experts. One of the specialities of Les 2 Alpes is that ‘the higher the altitude, the easier the pistes’. 60% of its pistes are for beginners and intermediates and 40% for experienced and expert skiers.

There are 417ha of sign posted pistes (of which 80ha are on the glacier) and 1,400ha off piste including the famous link to La Grave.

Above 2200m most of the runs are north-facing and the top glacier section guarantees good snow.

Beginners will enjoy the magnificent views from the top of the glacier (high altitude) with wide easy runs or the nursery slopes at resort level beside the village. There are 5 lifts free for all on the lower slopes of Les Deux Alpes. Beginners with 3 or 4 days practise (depending on how quick they pick it up) could potentially ski from the top of the glacier down to resort level on greens and easy blues. That’s 8km worth of skiing! Beginners can buy smaller area passes by the day that cover certain lifts. See our lift pass price section for the € price to buy in resort.

Intermediates are well catered for with a good array of blues and reds. The top Glacier du Mont de Lans area has some easy slopes with nice views. You can go from the top down to Mont de Lans (a descent of 2270m vertical, possibly world’s biggest on-piste vertical).

There are plenty of black runs and off-piste to keep the expert skier busy. For the more adventurous, an outing to the slopes of La Grave is a must (guide necessary).

2 Alpes is reached by snowcat from the top of the ski area to the 3568m Dome de la Lauze or a short walk.

The extensive off-piste terrain is huge (5 different domains) and challenging. There is a good selection of serious routes with vertical drops.

Les 2 Alpes also ranks amongst France’s best for snowboarding. At mid-mountain, there are two boarder-cross courses and a big terrain-park (probably the best in Europe) including half-pipe and higher up there are several innovative terrain features such as ledges, gullies, canyons, all of competition standard.

Currently there is a long very narrow green run (often icy), black runs (again often icy) and new for winter 13/14 a red run going down the side of the newly built Diable chairlift and under it towards the central green slopes that take you back down to the resort. Those beginners with lack of confidence and intermediates would be better to ride the gondola back down.

Did you know?

The glacier situated between 3,200m and 3,600m is a great asset. To preserve it and counterbalance the wind at an altitude of more 3,000m, they have used a specific technique for 2 years: snow traps. The mechanical lifts company stocks the snow with wooden barriers or half tubes dug into the glacier. Snow groomers then collect this snow daily to distribute it on all the ski slopes of the glacier. The work carried out during the winter allows us to guarantee the skiability of the high altitude ski area and also ensure perfect skiing conditions in the summer season.

At an altitude of 3,400m, discover an extraordinary 360° panorama over the French and Italian Alps, from Mont Blanc to Mont Ventoux, without forgetting La Meije and the mountain range of Les Ecrins. Thanks to its unique geographical location, it offers stunning and exceptional views.

The White Cruise: a 45 minute circuit in a snowcat to discover the mountains in all their splendour (3,600m).

The Ice cave, an extraordinary site created in 1993. After 17 years, it is now at an altitude of 3,200m. Change of place and decor, 20 sculptors and 6 months of hard manual work. The sculptures are a surprise, you’ll have to come and discover them for yourself!

Helicopter trips to Alpe-d’Huez are around 65 euros return and a shuttle-bus goes on Wednesdays and Thursdays (booking essential).

Les 2 Alpes Snow Report – 2004-2014 (10 season average)

Les Deux Alpes has always benefited from a superb snow record thanks to the sheer altitude of its ski area and its massive glacier. Snow cover on at least parts of the ski area is always guaranteed from early December until late April. In fact you can still ski there on the glacier in July & August (see our Summer skiing section if this is of interest). Here is the snow record data for Les 2 Alpes. The first row shows the week for which the measurement applies eg. February 3 is the 3rd week in February. Top slopes shows the average snow cover in cm at the top of the ski area. Bottom Slopes shows the average snow cover in cm at the bottom of the ski area (this is generally where the nursery pistes are located although in Les Deux Alpes  there are nursery slopes at the very bottom, at intermediate level and on the glacier). About 10 cm is generally enough to ski but it very much depends on what’s below ie. grass or more rocky surface.
