Maurienne Valley - Valfrejus

The resort

Valfréjus was one of the last resorts to be built in the Alps and although purpose built, it has a traditional village atmosphere.
A large natural ice rink is in the centre and the Tourist Office organises daily entertainment including torch light descents, acrobatic ski shows and snowman building competitions ...more

Multi-activity tickets are available which give free access, or substantial discounts to activities in the area. Try Badminton, horse riding, mini-golf, pétanque, tennis, archery, fishing... In July and August the chairlift runs from Sunday to Thursday for walkers and cyclists.

Valfréjus holds the ‘Les p’tits Montagnards’ label for its superb children facilities. Three children’s clubs entertain 6 to 17 year olds with games, activities, themed walks, cycling, and offers an introduction to orientation as well as interactive learning in Puppet theatres (children from 6 yrs old) and Magic shows (children from 8 yrs old). For children from 3 months to 6 years old ‘Les Petits Poucets’ in Modane offer full or half day care. The Tourist Office also offers a baby-sitting service in the evenings. There is a selection of shops, bars and restaurants with more shops and supermarkets at Modane.

Set amid larch and spruce trees and close to the Italian border Valfréjus is only a 10 minute drive from the motorway exit and the TGV station at Modane (4 hrs from Paris by train).

Skiing

Valfréjus is the birthplace of 'skwal' -a type of snowboard where both feet face the slope- and one of its instructors is the former 'skwal' world champion, Christophe Gros. It has a smallish ski area best suited to intermediates with long blues running back to the resort. ...more

Beginners have a choice of greens on the Plateau d'Arrondaz, which is also 'the place' to enjoy the spectacular scenery from the mountain restaurant.

The powder for which Valfréjus is well known, will suit advanced skiers who can also use their ski pass for La Norma  and Aussois (shuttle bus on Tuesdays for La Norma and on Thursdays for Aussois €7). Skiing in other Maurienne resorts is possible too or ski the 3 Vallées via the Orelle cable car.

Heliski is also offered for the more daring.

ORELLE – FAST ACCESS TO THE 3 VALLEYS SKI AREA

There are connections on most days via a shuttle coach from La Norma to the Orelle cable car (15km).

This new high capacity gondola linking the Maurienne Valley to Val Thorens and the 3 Vallées is perfect for all advanced skiers who want to enjoy top level skiing in the largest and certainly one of the best ski domains in the world with 600k of pistes.  Between Saint Michel and Modane - and only 6km from the Autoroute - Orelle could not be easier to access and has an excellent free parking facility.

Anyone with a Maurienne ‘2 day or more’ ski pass can get an Orelle/3 Vallées extension for only €22.50 (2006/07 prices) so you could save a lot of £s on buying a pass in one of the 3 Vallées’ resorts!  However, as the connecting pistes are Reds, the Orelle facility is not recommended for beginners. In particularly bad weather, it may be closed. (600km of pistes).

Other Ski Outings

A Monday-Friday service goes to La Norma (combined ski pass with Valfrejus).Every Thursday, the ESF Ski School organises an outing to Val Thorens.
