Maurienne Valley - Valloire

The resort

Built around a 17th century Baroque style church, Valloire has retained the charm and authenticity of days gone by with friendly welcoming residents. Restaurants will suit all tastes and budgets and range from the much-praised 'Le Gastilleur' to the cosy Crêperie. More

In the 'Golden Valley', Valloire and its 17 hamlets is a reasonably large traditional village. At the foot of the famous Galibier Pass, Valloire is accessed via the motorway exit and TGV station at St Michel de Maurienne (17km and 4 hrs from Paris by train).

'La Petite Marmite', with its 6-day regional take-away meal formula, will suit those who want to eat in.  There is a good selection of bars, discos, shops, ice rink, bowling and fitness centre. Alternatively visit a working farm to buy the local Beaufort cheese or try spotting the chamois on snowshoe outings, go parapenting or try a microlight flight. There are 5 kindergartens while teenagers (10 to 99!) will be keen to visit the Adventure Park.

Skiing

Valloire is rightly recognised internationally as an excellent ski region. With 150km of well groomed piste linked to nearby Valmeinier and 70 per cent of the domain above 2000 metres, 350 snow cannons and predominantly North facing slopes, snow conditions are first class. More

The lightly wooded terrain is varied and some of the runs are as long as 1,000 vertical metres.

There is an above average choice of runs for beginners both for starting and progressing. They can quickly get a 'feel' for the peaks on the nursery slopes around the 'Thimel' mountain restaurant while intermediates have a good choice of runs from wide reds to gentle blues.

The blacks like the long 'Cascade' will test many experienced skiers.

There is also a Snow Park & half-pipe.
