Tarentaise - Tignes Les Brevieres

The resort

Tignes is proud of its snowsure reputation, with summer skiing on its glacier, one of Europe's 20 highest ski areas. The architectural reputation is much more questionable, although a beautification process is underway across the resort. Older, uglier buildings are being improved and new buildings more sympathetic to the stunning mountain scenery. ...more

But there has been a village in the valley for centuries before the ski lifts arrived and you can stay in picturesque Les Brévières and ski the Espace Killy shared by Tignes and neighbouring, lift-linked, Val d'Isère.  Parts of the village date back to the13th century, but it is still at a snowsure altitude of 1550m.

Unspoilt by large-scale modern development, this is still very much a corner of the real France, most of the village restaurants and bars are family run.  It is also considerably cheaper to stay in than its better known neighbours, each 15 minutes away by road, with a frequent bus service during the day.

Skiing

Les Brévières is fully ski connected to Tignes, with its exceptional variety of skiing possibilities including some of the most extensive off-piste in the world. Its altitude and resulting snow reliability, along with a huge arsenal of snow guns when needed, means it is normally possible to ski at least a 1,400m vertical from November until the lifts close in May. ...more

Skiing in Les Brevieres itself is ideal for families or groups looking for a relaxing base.  The trails on the mainly north facing slopes locally are generally tree-lined and skiers are rewarded at the bottom of the mountain with a couple of welcoming restaurants.

In the village itself, there is a free drag lift and its own sectioned off gentle nursery slope which is free of through traffic.  Tignes les Brevieres is particularly suitable for beginners, with a network of tree-lined greens and blues immediately above the village.  For children this is an excellent area for beginners.  Once more confident, beginners can take the six person bubble lift up to Tignes 2,100m, and from there all over Tignes and Val d’Isere.

Tignes and Val d’Isere together form the Espace Killy ski domain – a mecca for experts and perfect for the adventurous intermediate. The lift system is second to none with many new high-speed lifts, thanks to investment ahead of Val d’Isere hosting the Alpine Ski world Championships in 2009.

The Espace Killy is renowned for offering some of the best lift served off piste skiing in the world. There is a vast variety of terrain to suit all levels from intermediate to free-rider. Lognan is ideal for novices and families as the slopes are broad and not especially difficult. The Vallons de la Sache is one of the most famous off piste routes – a descent of 1200m vertical down a breathtaking valley in the national park, overlooked by the Sache glacier. Starting from l’Aiguille Percee at 2750m you arrive down in Les Brevieres below the Tignes dam.

Lift access to yet more skiing at St. Foy and Les Arcs are a ten minute drive from Les Brevieres, Whilst La Rosiere and La Plagne are about 30 minutes away.  Those with their own car can drive to either Val d'Isere or the main Tignes resort in about a quarter of an hour and a day of skiing at most of these resorts is possible at no additional cost with lift passes valid six days or more.
