Why ski at Easter and where to ski at Easter?

Skiing in March or April can be a rewarding time to take your ski holiday. The weather is generally sunnier with increased sunshine hours (and also warmer air temperature than January) meaning lots of blue sky ski days but also with a mix of snow days (in fact resorts often get their heaviest falls in March/April). Of course no-one can control the weather but generally this is how it goes. Often you wake up to those ‘Blue Bird days’ which means bright sunny clear blue skies after a night of fresh snowfall.

Prices are generally lower as well (especially when compared to February or Christmas). Mid-March is usually as cheap as mid-January and some resorts in April even drop their prices for the Easter ski holiday weeks.

The rule of thumb usually is the higher the ski resort the better the snow coverage, although things like north facing pistes and tree lined runs can make all the difference. Resorts such as Les Saisies aren’t especially high (compared with La Plagne or Tignes…) yet the snow coverage is normally excellent in April.

Late season skiing – ski areas open until late April 2013

Most ski resorts shut weekend of 20/04/13 but the following resorts are open for a week or more later than this for April skiing (subject to change):

Chamonix, Argentiere– parts of the Chamonix Valley are scheduled to be open until 12/05/13

Peisey-Vallandry (Les Arcs) – scheduled to be open until 27/04/13

Montchavin/Les Coches (La Plagne) - scheduled to be open until 27/04/13

Orelle (Val Thorens) – scheduled to be open until May 2013

Les Deux Alpes - scheduled to be open until 27/04/13

Montgenevre – local Montgenevre scheduled to be open until May

La Tania (3 Valleys) - scheduled to be open until 26/04/13

Easter Ski Snow record

Nearly all our resorts have a snow range above 1500m (around 5,000ft). Altitude is however not the only important factor. Some areas like the Grand Massif or Mont-Blanc Val d’Arly benefit from a microclimate because of their close proximity to Europe’s highest peak, Mont-Blanc. These areas have a much more reliable snow record than other resorts at the same altitude or even than some higher-up. Other important factors for good snow are North-facing slopes as whatever cover they get will simply last longer. What lies below the snow cover is also of importance: a few centimetres will be enough to ski on pasture whereas more will be required to cover a rocky surface. Finally resorts that have snow cannons to cover the lower slopes (generally the nursery slopes) offer a good guarantee. These will normally run at night from early December to top-up on natural snow cover. Above all what is important is to check the hard facts as in the end the snow history over a period of time is the only reliable indicator. Over the past 8 years skiing was available in all our featured resorts for Ski at Easter.
