The walled town of Briançon is the highest in Europe and truly unique. Bourg-d'Oisans, the middle age market town is also worth a visit. For some of the best views of the Alps take the cable car from Vaujany or L'Alpe d'Huez to Pic Blanc (3300m) or the La Meije cable car (3200m) from La Grave.

Briançon - This walled town is the highest in Europe and truly unique. Once a first class fortress commanding a passage from Italy into France. With its steep and narrow streets of 18th century houses climbing to the citadel, sundials painted in the 18th century enhance the town’s facades, and the Cordeliers Church with its superb Fresco paintings.

The Lautaret Alpine Garden: One of the most beautiful landscaped gardens in Europe. This enchanting garden is situated in a magnificent setting overlooking the Meije. Discover the dazzling beauty and infinite diversity of flowers from the Alps and other mountain regions of the world…

Grenoble – A thriving modern city as well as the economic, cultural, and touristic capital of the French Alps. Famous for the walnuts used by local confectioners, and its glove making industry. The old town offers many interesting sights; The Place Grenette, Grande Rue, the Palais de Justice and the Eglise-musee St Laurent with the St. Oyland crypt.

Gap – a lively commercial town and main administrative town of the Hautes-Alpes département. Worth visiting are the Domaine de Charence - headquarters of the of the Parc National des Écrins, the Cathedral, Town Hall, and Musée Départemental.

Des Grottes de Glace – Ice caves have been dug and sculpted out of the ice. In La Grave, Les Deux Alpes, Alpes D’Huez, Chamonix Mer de Glace, and Serre Chevalier. Learn about the amazing world of glaciers from the interior and observe deep, natural crevasses 30 metres below the surface, together with a changing variety of ephemeral ice-sculptures, created by a team of artists. Open all summer.

Oratoire du Chazelet – Past the village of Les Terrasses with its picturesque church, the isolated Oratoire du Chazelet affords splendid views of the Meije Massif.

 

 

Food

 

Worth trying during your stay are the mountain trout, wild raspberry and bilberry tart, Les Diots (little sausages cooked in white wine), Les Crozets de l'Oisans (small cubes of pasta) and the ubiquitous Gratin Dauphinois, the famous potato gratin.
